Tigard History
Steeped in the legacy of the Oregon Trail and the ambitions of pioneering families, Tigard has evolved into the vibrant community we know today. The Tigard family, led by Wilson M. Tigard, left an indelible mark on the landscape when they settled in the area in 1852, contributing to the establishment of the East Butte School, a general store, and a meeting hall.
The evolution continued with the renaming of East Butte to “Tigardville” in 1886, reflecting the family’s deep roots. Tigard’s growth gained momentum between 1907 and 1910, characterized by the blossoming of Main Street and the arrival of the Oregon Electric Railway in 1910, transforming Tigardville into a city in 1961.
The introduction of electricity in 1911 and the landmark Dolan v. City of Tigard case in 1994 showcase Tigard’s resilience and adaptability. As Main Street embraced modernity with paved streets and a burgeoning business district, Tigard maintained a delicate balance between progress and preservation of its heritage.
Tigard, once a small farming community, now stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community and progress. Join us at Meridian Acupuncture & Wellness to connect with Tigard’s rich history while embarking on a journey to holistic well-being.
